This week, students continued developing their skills in addition and subtraction through differentiated activities. Students are using a variety of materials to model their understanding of the two processes, as well as support accuracy and self-correction.
We have also been wrapping up our research on communities in the past through peer collaboration (sharing what we've found, identifying gaps and working together to find information on those tricky areas). Students also completed their maps of Canada by cutting them out, and labeling them. Grade 1s labelled their maps with "My Community: Calgary, Alberta" and grade 2s labelled theirs with Calgary and their research community, and then described where their community in relation to Calgary.
With Sports Day on Friday, it gave us many opportunities to conduct surveys. Students came up with two original ideas for team names based on our beach theme, and then surveyed the class on which was the better idea. After compiling a list of all the favourites, we then conducted another survey from the 17 ideas. Finally, we decided we were "Ms. Thomas' Totally Awesome Turtles". Students created our flag to carry to the pep rally Friday morning.
Last, students did some creative writing using this title, "The Day the Teacher Went Bananas".
I hope this is just a great creative writing idea, and not a prediction for next week... |
