End of Year!

Hi Families,

On Monday, we enjoyed a presentation from the Calgary Public Library about their Summer Reading Challenge. Students brought home some information about the challenge, or you can find more information here: https://calgarylibrary.ca/ultimate-summer-challenge/

In addition to the Summer Reading Challenge, the Calgary Public Library has a multitude of exciting FREE programs being offered this summer. From Coding to Bookmaking, Indigenous Drumming Circle to Biofacts, you can find out more about the Special Programs here: https://events.calgarypubliclibrary.com/programs/online-registration

Over the last couple of months, students developed their photography skills through a Seasonal Changes of Water photography study. All your child's photos are available online in their Google Drive. You will need their educbe.ca Username (email) and password to access their Drive at home. These are coming home in their bags tonight, recorded on their blue computer cards.

We enjoyed outdoor Phys. Ed. with our buddies this week, exploring the Play-and-Go Cart created by Ms. Arnold and Ms. Grant's classes for the Mayor's Expo this year. Thanks to these classes for creating such a wonderful resource for outdoor play!

Today, students cleaned out their cubbies and brought home the majority of their work books. Please look especially for their scrapbooks, which has photos from September and June on the cover, and an end of year reflection inside. We took time today to look back at our work from the beginning of the year, and each child found something to celebrate and be proud of.

We also celebrated our Summer Birthdays today. Happy Birthday to those students celebrating their birthdays in July and August! Thank you for bringing in treats to share with us!

Report cards will be coming home tomorrow. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me, I am happy to discuss your child's learning with you.

Thank you to all the families for an amazing year! I hope you have a safe, relaxing and FUN summer! See you in September!

Ms. Thomas

Hi Families,

This week, students continued developing their skills in addition and subtraction through differentiated activities. Students are using a variety of materials to model their understanding of the two processes, as well as support accuracy and self-correction.

We have also been wrapping up our research on communities in the past through peer collaboration (sharing what we've found, identifying gaps and working together to find information on those tricky areas). Students also completed their maps of Canada by cutting them out, and labeling them. Grade 1s labelled their maps with "My Community: Calgary, Alberta" and grade 2s labelled theirs with Calgary and their research community, and then described where their community in relation to Calgary.

With Sports Day on Friday, it gave us many opportunities to conduct surveys. Students came up with two original ideas for team names based on our beach theme, and then surveyed the class on which was the better idea. After compiling a list of all the favourites, we then conducted another survey from the 17 ideas. Finally, we decided we were "Ms. Thomas' Totally Awesome Turtles". Students created our flag to carry to the pep rally Friday morning.

Last, students did some creative writing using this title, "The Day the Teacher Went Bananas".

I hope this is just a great creative writing idea, and not a prediction for next week...
Poetry folders went home this week. They do not have to come back on Monday. Please use them over the summer to practice the now familiar poems, and continue developing your child's fluency in reading.

Some reminders for our last three days:

1. Home Reading Collection - I am starting to collect Home Reading books. Please make sure your child returns all *5* books.

2.  Summer Birthdays Celebration - Next Tuesday in the afternoon, we will be celebrating all students who have a birthday during the summer.

3. Next Wednesday, June 27th is our last day of school. It is also a FULL DAY, students will be dismissed at their regular time of 2:43pm.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Hi Families,

This week, our swimming lessons at Trico Centre wrapped up. A swimming report card will have come home with your child on Tuesday. These are important records if you plan to continue swimming lessons in the future. If the report card somehow did not make it home, you will need to contact the Trico Centre for a replacement. Thank you to all the volunteers who came and supported students in the change room before and after lessons - your help is appreciated by both myself and the students.

The items shown in the below picture are all items found in the change room after our lessons. If any of them belong to your child, please contact me to claim them.

We have enjoyed learning the basic skills of Aussie Rules Football this week. Students applied the skills of "handballing" and kicking in a variety of familiar games like Capture the Flag.

Students completed their May update this week. Some students emailed home their update, and others wrote a traditional letter, wanting to showcase how their penmanship has improved. Thank you for taking the time to respond to your child's email.

We continued our exploration of the Fundamental Needs of People by starting our own research. Grade 1 students are exploring Calgary in the past, and grade 2 students are exploring other Canadian communities in the past. They are also creating a map of Canada using puzzle maps to identify where their community is. Students are gathering information from pictures, words and videos. In the process, they are also developing their skills of inferencing, using evidence and reasoning to draw conclusions and record ideas.

Students have been working on self-paced addition and subtraction learning. They have been introduced to a variety of materials to solve problems depending on their readiness, and are working with them daily.

Thank you to all the families who have exchanged Home Reading this week. Students are always so excited to bring home books from their lessons to share with you. Home Reading exchange will be available for at least another week, so please take this opportunity to exchange at least one last time.

A reminder that we have our final Fish Creek Park field-trip on Wednesday. We still require 2 volunteers to join us for the day. If you are available, please contact me.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Hi Families,

Yes, you read that blog date correctly, June 1st. Can you believe it?

On Monday, we enjoyed a performance from Evergreen Theatre. The "Sinking Island" was a nautical adventure showing how our changing oceans affect the world around us.

The highlight of our week was definitely out field trip to Fish Creek Park. We had an absolutely amazing day! Beginning at Votier's Flats, we had opportunities to revisit the area and the wonderings we left with last time. It was amazing to see how much the landscaped "greened up" and grew in such a short time! We then walked to Bebo Grove, exploring the creek at multiple stops along the way. At Bebo Grove, we experienced a whole new landscape of coniferous trees, with access to the creek and some marsh areas. We can't wait until our final field trip covering Bebo Grove to Shannon Terrace on Wednesday, June 13th. We are looking for volunteers to join us for the day. If you are able to volunteer, please contact me.

We continued with our swimming lessons this week, and have one more this upcoming Tuesday, June 5th. Thank you to all the volunteers who have made this experience so smooth and effortless! We could not do it without you!

With the rain this week, students wrote their own shape (or concrete) poem titled "Rain" to share with you. Please find it in their Poetry folder for sharing.

We also continued with our raindrop photography skills, using feedback loops to help us become more successful. When we reviewed the photographs, there were lots of gasps of astonishment as we recognized our growth as photographers, as well as the wonder of macro photography.

Invitations for our upcoming Volunteer Tea came home this week. Thank you to all the volunteers who have taken different roles in our classroom and school! Please RSVP to lakebonavista@cbe.ab.ca if you plan to attend.

A note about Home Reading. I will begin collection of Home Reading books in approximately two weeks. Please take this opportunity to exchange your child's Home Reading books a couple more times before the end of the year to understand where they are at with their reading, and celebrate their growth with up-to-date books.

Our Aussie Rules visiting program begins on Monday. If you have not done so already, please return your child's Acknowledgement of Risk (orange) on Monday. Without a complete form, they will not be able to participate.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Ms. Thomas
