Alien Inline Skating

Hi Families,

Alien In-Line, Alberta’s favourite school inline skating program, is coming to Lake Bonavista School March 4th – 8th and 11th – 15th.

Times for Ms Thomas' class:
Monday, March 11th, 8:20 - 9:20
Wednesday, March 13th, 8:20 - 9:20

Friday, March 15th, 8:20 - 9:20

We strictly require all students wear helmets at all times while on skates. Helmets are provided for all students however it is recommended that you bring in your own helmet. Students need to wear comfortably fitting clothes on skating days (not too tight and not to baggy). Skirts, dresses or shorts should be avoided.  All children need to have clean, dry full-sized socks.

Thank you to School Council for graciously funding this Active Living opportunity. An “Acknowledgement of Risk” form for this On-Site Activity was sent home today. Please read, sign and return the form by March 4, 2019. Please note that this form needs to be returned in order for your child to participate in the In-line skating program.

Volunteer - Take Home Project

Hi Families,

I was wondering if any parent from our classroom enjoys colouring? I have a well-loved resource that needs a facelift after many years of use and am looking for a volunteer to help colour some images.

The project includes colouring 26 different characters, each printed on a half size paper. The images are quite simple, nothing too detailed.

If you're interested, would you mind sending me an email?

Thank you!
Ms Thomas

Pink Shirt Day

Next Wednesday, February 27th is Pink Shirt Day.

We will be having conversations around the event next week, and children are encouraged to practice kindness and wear PINK to symbolize that they do not tolerate bullying.

Hi Families,

I hope you've enjoyed the few days of sunny, warmer weather we've had this week! Have you noticed the daylight hours becoming longer? It feels so nice to be outside in the morning on supervision, and have the sun making its way up! We were gifted with beautiful weather for our Winter Walk this afternoon as well! What a great way to end our week!

This week, we had Byblos Bakery in to teach us about about the new Canada Food Guide and healthy choices. Each student created their own delicious pita based on choices brought from home - it was wonderful to see such diversity in our choices! It gave me some great ideas for my own lunches! Students were given a package of pitas, a sample of Wow Butter, and a Pressed by Kind bar to demonstrate a balanced lunch of carbohydrates, protein and fruits and vegetables.

We also started a small individual weaving project. Students quickly noticed that the weaving we are doing is just an AB pattern with direction as the attribute changing! Up, down, up, down! We can change the design of weaving by changing the pattern, but our looms are just small, so we're sticking to the simple pattern. Students continued this work through the week, choosing different colour yarn strands to create a personal piece of art. We will have them displayed in the hallway for March conferences.

We revisited the social thinking curriculum with Miss Brown's class, sorting different kinds of school problems into big, medium and small problems, and then generating new ideas of small, school problems in groups. Each student is proving to be quite the Social Detective as they identify why a problem is small, medium or big and offer solutions. We will continue developing our ideas into social stories next week.

As we work on different counting strategies, we are developing our communication and reasoning skills, using appropriate mathematical vocabulary. With skip counting, students have become fluent at applying the 2, 5 and 10 sequence to different scenarios, so this week I chose a number on the hundreds board and asked them if they were able to identify my skip counting pattern (2, 5 or 10) based on the one number. Challenge your child at home with this same idea using the Hundreds Board link I provided last week.

Can your child explain which skip counting pattern has been used to reach the following numbers?
How do they know?
Recently, we identified an ongoing problem with the care and organization of books in our classroom. So, working together, we brought out all the books from one bookshelf, reorganized them according to categories the students created, and working with a partner, created a label for the basket using pictures and words to maintain the organization. So far, its working!

Some reminders for next week:

- No Library Exchange due to a visiting program in the library.
- Code Mobile visiting the school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
- No School for students on Friday, March 1st. PD Day for teachers.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Ms Thomas

Hi Families,

Today was Miss Herman's last day as a student-teacher in our classroom. We have loved having her in our classroom, and greatly appreciate all the gifts, talents and teachings she has shared with us. We hope she comes back to visit sometime soon as we will miss her dearly!

This week, Miss Herman concluded the Seven Grandfather Teaching with Wisdom, Truth, Honesty and Humility.

As a conclusion to the teachings, each student made a chain of 7 beads, with 7 colours, to represent the Seven Grandfather Teachings, and act as a reminder of how to treat each other.

On Tuesday, Miss Herman surprised us by having our Dream Jars illuminated and waiting for us on our tables when we walked into the classroom. Each student's Dream Jar is coming home with them next week to share with you.

Students used different colours to create a Dream Jar that reflected the mood of their dream.
In math, we continue to explore numbers to 100, as well as strategies along the continuum for counting and pre-addition, specifically grouping numbers into 2s, 5s and 10s, for skip counting.

Sometimes, we can skip count items based on pre-existing groupings, like our fingers, or rows of eggs in a carton.

But sometimes, we need to create groups for efficient counting. We need to estimate first to decide what kind of groupings are most efficient for the items. Skip counting forward and backward, as well as counting on and counting back, all connect to pre-addition and pre-subtraction strategies.

Students estimated that this group of jellybeans was less than 20.
Therefore, grouping by 2s or 5s made the most sense.
Students estimated Ms Thomas spilled more than 20 googly eyes.
They grouped by 5s or 10s to find out how many.

Here is a list of ideas for home practice to develop number sense, and complement the work we are doing in the classroom:
  • Using the interactive hundreds board to highlight skip counting patterns: http://www.abcya.com/interactive_100_number_chart.htm
  • Using the interactive hundreds board to fill in missing numbers: http://www.abcya.com/one_hundred_number_chart_game.htm
  • Looking at and describing patterns that appear in the hundreds board
  • Talking about place value (tens and ones), writing and building/drawing two numbers like 13 and 31 and having your child tell you what’s the same, and what’s different
  • Exploring how skip counting by 2 is connected to odd and even
  • Giving your child a group of objects (Lego pieces, Cheerios, beads, etc) and have them group the objects in different ways for counting
  • Asking questions like how many would be 1 more? 2 more? 10 more?
  • How many more would you need to have ___?
  • How many less would you need to have ___ ?
  • Starfall.com has some math activities targeting basic number sense
  • The card game Shut the Box is wonderful for practicing a variety of number sense skills. Students have been taught this game in class.

Reminders for next week:

- Library exchange on Wednesday.
- February Scholastic book orders due Wednesday if you wish to order.
- Class Valentine's Day celebration on Wednesday, February 13th. If you plan on sending valentines, please send one for every member of our classroom community, we have 17 students. If your child cannot remember names, you can address the valentine: To My Friend.
- Family Dance on Wednesday, February 13th. See notice sent home earlier this week for details.
- No school Thursday, February 14th or Friday, February 15th due to Teacher's Convention.
- No school Monday, February 18th due to Family Day holiday.

If you have not already done so, please send in your child's report card envelope for re-use in June.

The weather forecast continues to be quite cool in the upcoming week. Blue Days are in affect when the weather is -20 degrees celcius or below. Some days, we have a Blue Day in the morning, but then temperatures warm up enough for us to enjoy an outdoor lunch and recess in the afternoon. Please continue to send your child to school ready to be comfortable outdoors (boots, jacket, hat, mitts and snowpants).

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Ms. Thomas

School Spirit Family Dance - Volunteers and Cakes Needed!

Our School Spirit! Family Dance is coming up quickly and we’re still in need of a lot of volunteers. Each volunteer opportunity is only half an hour, so you can slip away and have fun with other parents at various stations!

Not able to volunteer time that night? We have another way you can contribute.

We’re looking for bakers (or purchasers) to provide cakes, cupcakes or other baked goods as prizes for our very popular Cake Walk event running at the dance. Donating 12 cupcakes? Put six each in two containers and sign up for two baked goods. Awesome!! *The baked items can be dropped off at the front entrance of the school on Wednesday morning or afternoon.

*Thank you for bringing a cake or baked item! Please be aware that the dish your cake is sent to us on will not be returned to you.

Please ensure all baked items are either nut free or labelled as containing nuts or as Gluten Free, etc.

If you have any further questions, please contact Krista at LBSvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com
Thank you for your support everyone and see you on Wednesday night!
