I hope you've enjoyed the few days of sunny, warmer weather we've had this week! Have you noticed the daylight hours becoming longer? It feels so nice to be outside in the morning on supervision, and have the sun making its way up! We were gifted with beautiful weather for our Winter Walk this afternoon as well! What a great way to end our week!
This week, we had Byblos Bakery in to teach us about about the new Canada Food Guide and healthy choices. Each student created their own delicious pita based on choices brought from home - it was wonderful to see such diversity in our choices! It gave me some great ideas for my own lunches! Students were given a package of pitas, a sample of Wow Butter, and a Pressed by Kind bar to demonstrate a balanced lunch of carbohydrates, protein and fruits and vegetables.
We also started a small individual weaving project. Students quickly noticed that the weaving we are doing is just an AB pattern with direction as the attribute changing! Up, down, up, down! We can change the design of weaving by changing the pattern, but our looms are just small, so we're sticking to the simple pattern. Students continued this work through the week, choosing different colour yarn strands to create a personal piece of art. We will have them displayed in the hallway for March conferences.
We revisited the social thinking curriculum with Miss Brown's class, sorting different kinds of school problems into big, medium and small problems, and then generating new ideas of small, school problems in groups. Each student is proving to be quite the Social Detective as they identify why a problem is small, medium or big and offer solutions. We will continue developing our ideas into social stories next week.
As we work on different counting strategies, we are developing our communication and reasoning skills, using appropriate mathematical vocabulary. With skip counting, students have become fluent at applying the 2, 5 and 10 sequence to different scenarios, so this week I chose a number on the hundreds board and asked them if they were able to identify my skip counting pattern (2, 5 or 10) based on the one number. Challenge your child at home with this same idea using the Hundreds Board link I provided last week.
Can your child explain which skip counting pattern has been used to reach the following numbers? How do they know? |
Some reminders for next week:
- No Library Exchange due to a visiting program in the library.
- Code Mobile visiting the school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
- No School for students on Friday, March 1st. PD Day for teachers.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
